Anonymised Identities

Last updated

CityRP does not hide players' names from each other: no recognition system where names are learned in character, and no hiding IC names or descriptions on the scoreboard.

Jobs are a different matter and have already changed. A player's job title and job colour are hidden by default now, and a player who wants them shown opts in by wearing the nametag item. Requests to hide job information are covered by that, not by this decision.

Why

Every request to hide names failed a staff vote, from 2016 to 2018. The recurring view was that it costs everyone quality of life for little gain against metagaming, since a player who wants to metagame will find a way regardless. Staff also pointed out that the game is not fully serious, that friends know each other by Steam name, and that some roleplay depends on the information, such as vehicle recovery needing to know whose car it is. As one 2018 vote put it: "less QoL for no benefit".

Making everyone learn names in character would also mandate a serious-RP convention, which the Meet Players Where They Are philosophy rules out.
